A group of seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
